Paul Bate – Founder & Portfolio Manager
Paul Bate

Paul Bate graduated from Oxford University in 1977 with an honours degree in Physics. After joining the Swire Group in Hong Kong, on secondment to Cathay Pacific Airways, he worked in marketing and operations, in Thailand and Taiwan. In 1980 he joined Schlumberger Technical Services S.A. as a wireline engineer, working in China and Brunei. In 1983 he set up Interpacific Oilfield Services, an oil drilling company which he ran until 1987, performing drilling services in Indonesia. In 1987 he founded Peak Company, a contract manufacturer with manufacturing operations throughout Asia. In 1993 he went to Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford University Engineering Department, graduating in 1995 with an MBA and an MSE. From 1996 to 1998 he worked as CEO of Land & General Investment Corp. a private equity fund in the CIS and thereafter in Hong Kong. He joined Nomura International in Hong Kong in 1999 as Head of Taiwan Research and Head of Regional Technology Research, based in Taipei. In 2002 he established Matterhorn Investment Management LLP as an independent investment manager and advisor. Paul speaks French, Mandarin, Thai and Indonesian proficiently.

Henry Ashton
Henry Ashton

Henry Ashton studied Economics at Oxford University, graduating as a Master of Philosophy in June 2007. Prior to this he gained a First Class Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Warwick University in 2005.  Henry joined the operations team in July 2007 and has since moved into risk management.

 

 

Peter Burdett
Peter Burdett

Peter Burdett graduated in July 2006 from Warwick University with a First Class Honours Degree in Mathematics. Peter joined the operations team in August 2006 and now works as a quantitative analyst in the risk management team and as a trader.                                                                                                                   

 

 

Lorcan Burke
Lorcan Burke

Lorcan Burke graduated from Dublin City University in 2007 with a BSc in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics and completed an MSc in Investment Management at CASS Business School in 2008. He joined the operations team in August 2008 and has since become an equity analyst.                                    

 

 

Maxime Destel – Head of Risk Management
Maxime Destel

Maxime Destel has a degree in Physics from University Paris 7, and a Master’s degree in Finance from ISC Paris. He worked for Credit Lyonnais Equity Capital Markets in the origination department (Convertible Bonds), and as Portfolio Manager Assistant for Marly Gestion Portfolio Management, HSBC subsidiary. Maxime speaks French, English and Spanish. He joined Matterhorn late 2003 and has overall responsibility for risk management, trading and operations.                                                                                    

 

Elie El Khoury
Elie El Khoury

Elie El Khoury obtained an MSc in Finance and Economics with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science in July 2008. Prior to this, he completed a Bachelor of Computer and Communication Engineering (high distinction) from the American University of Beirut in June 2007. Elie speaks French, English and Arabic. He joined the operations team in July 2008 and has since become part of the risk management team.                                                                                                                

 

Yiting Feng
Yiting Feng

Yiting Feng graduated from University College London in 2008 with a First Class Honours Master in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, during which she spent a year abroad in Columbia University in New York. She joined the investment team in November 2009.

Philip Gee

Philip Gee graduated in July 2006 from the University of Bristol with a First Class Honours Degree in Masters of Mechanical Engineering.                                  

 

 

 

Vivian Hou
Vivian Hou

Vivian Hou graduated from Shanghai University in 1995 with a B.A. in Modern Languages. After joining the Bank of China, she worked in International Settlement as an Assistant Manager and later in Corporate Banking as a Manager. Her responsibilities included credit analysis, business and industrial analysis, as well as client and government relationships. In the year 2000, she joined Shanghai Zhong Rui, an industrial holding company with interests ranging from manufacturing, trading, and investment, as a Senior Manager in charge of strategic planning and investment. In 2002 she went to Oxford University, graduating in 2003 with an MBA. She joined Matterhorn in 2004 as an equity research analyst and moved to the Hong Kong office in 2008. Vivian speaks English, Mandarin and Shanghainese, French and has basic knowledge of Japanese.

Charles Howlett – Senior Equity Research Analyst
Charles Howlett

Charles Howlett, CFA graduated from Oxford University in 1994 with an Honours Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He joined the Regent Pacific Group in Hong Kong as an Asian equity analyst, later becoming a Fund Manager for several absolute return long-only portfolios. In 1999, Charles went to IESE Business School in Barcelona, graduating in 2001 with an MBA. He then spent 2 years in London with Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein working in European equity trading and research sales with a focus on the pharmaceutical sector, before joining Liberty Ermitage in 2003 as a Senior Portfolio Manager. Charles joined Matterhorn in 2006 and is a senior equity analyst. 

Chris Hsieh - Senior Equity Research Analyst
Chris Hsieh

Chris Hsieh graduated from Sonoma State University in 1992 and earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. Working as a Taipei-based senior analyst and director for Capital Securities, Nomura Securities and ING Financial Markets, his areas of coverage included construction, shipping, telecommunications and semiconductors. In 2004 he joined Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s Finance Department as a senior manager and since 2005 has been studying for a finance doctorate from Renmin University in the Peoples’ Republic of China. Chris joined Matterhorn in 2008 as a Beijing-based senior equity research analyst.

Christopher Spalton graduated from Durham University in July 2005 with a First Class Honours degree in Economics. He joined Matterhorn in August 2005 as an equity analyst.

Nesrine Jaffer
Nesrine Jaffer

Nesrine Jaffer graduated in 2008 from University College London and SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) with a First Class Honours degree in French and Arabic. During her academic studies, she spent a year abroad studying Arabic literature at the University of Damascus and contributed a chapter on the Global Potential of Islamic Finance in a Euromoney publication entitled Islamic Wealth Management. In July 2009, she worked in Société Générale's Structured Products sales and distribution team, covering the Middle East and North Africa region. She joined Matterhorn's sales and client relations team in 2010. Nesrine speaks English, French and Arabic.

Andrea Stevenson

Andrea Stevenson, CFA graduated from Durham University in 2002 with an Honours degree in Economics and Business Management. She then completed an MSc in Banking and Finance at Stirling University in 2003 before beginning her career with JPMorgan on their Asset Management graduate programme. In 2005 she joined Barclays Global Investors in London where she was a Portfolio Manager of quantitative European equity funds, both long-only and long-short. Andrea joined Matterhorn in 2009 working in marketing and client relations.

Ewan Christian – Head of Business Management & Compliance
Ewan Christian

Ewan Christian studied accountancy at the City of London Polytechnic before joining Barclays Bank in 1979. He joined Barclays de Zoete Wedd Investment Management in 1986 as a Fund Manager of pension funds, insurance funds and a Barclays Unicorn unit trust. In 1992, he joined Franklin Hotel Investments as Business Development Manager before rejoining the City in 1996 with Flemings in private wealth management and ‘private’ unit trusts.  In 2000 he set up Wickam Capital as the company’s COO, marketing and finance director.  He joined Matterhorn Investment Management in March 2006 as Business Manager and is responsible for the firm’s operations.  He is a Fellow of the Securities Institute.

Frances Collard
Frances Collard

Frances Collard graduated from Bristol University in 2009 with a First Class Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. Prior to this she specialised in Fashion and Textiles during an Art Foundation Course at Chelsea College of Art and Design, where she was awarded a Distinction. Frances joined the administration team in 2010.                                                  

 

 

Cassandra Scott - Hayward
Cassandra Scott - Hayward

Cassandra Scott – Hayward graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2002 with MA Hons International Relations. After working in Germany for 4 years in the equestrian business including working for the German Olympic team, she returned to the UK where she ran her own equestrian business for 5 years. After gaining her MA Hons she joined Matterhorn Investment Management where she is responsible for office management, legal and administrative affairs.                                                                                                                                      

 

Natalie Lee
Natalie Lee

Natalie Lee joined Matterhorn’s Hong Kong Office in September 2008 where she manages all the business affairs of the Hong Kong operation. Educated in Hong Kong, Natalie also attended the Hawaii Pacific University graduating with a BSc in Business Administration. Returning to Hong Kong in 1996, Natalie worked in marketing and sales management for legal information publisher Sweet & Maxwell Asia, regional travel trade publishers TTG Asia Media and Hong Kong Disneyland. In 2006, she was hired by China Travel Service as project and events manager. In 2010, Natalie graduated from the Manchester Metropolitan University with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB).

Freddie Leatham
Freddie Leatham

Freddie Leatham graduated from Newcastle University in 2003 with a BA in Business Management. Having completed internships with Cazenove and Coutts, he worked for ABN AMRO prior to joining Matterhorn. Freddie has had extensive experience in IT, and is proficient in building network infrastructures, dynamic websites, and complex portfolio management systems. Alexander Lorenzi
Alexander Lorenzi

Alexander Lorenzi graduated in 2006 from Sussex University with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence. He then went on to complete an MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems before joining Matterhorn’s systems team in February 2008.

 

 

 

Caspar MacRae
Caspar MacRae

Caspar MacRae graduated from Westminster University in 2002 with a BSc in Artificial Intelligence. In 2006 he attained an MSc from Queen Mary in Advanced Methods in Computer Science, focusing on High Performance Computing, Distributed Systems and Information Retrieval. Before joining Matterhorn in September of 2009, he worked for a small search engine company.
